Happy Mother’s Day, 2011

I may be disowned after putting this picture on my blog but this is one of my favorite pictures of my two little angels.  At least they were angels at this age.  If not for these two then today would not be so special for me.  Brian was not yet two years old and Scott was  four years old.

The Take Action Bible NKJV

Filed under: Book Reviews on Sunday, May 1st, 2011 by Deanna Gottreu | No Comments

The Take Action Bible NKJV is definitely a different Bible.  It is not the words of the Bible that make it different but the “take action” pages that are inserted throughout the book.  There are fifteen stories of ordinary people who have done one of the five actions—go, serve, give, heal, or teach.  The stories touch the heart and show what just one person following God’s leadership can do.  At the end of each story section there is a scripture selection that leads to a question about helping others and then a second question asking what you can do, and then a page for action notes.  At the end of the Bible is a list of fifty-two action ideas that anyone can do to make a difference, even if they are on a very limited budget.  A plan for reading the Bible through in one year, a concordance, and ten color maps are also included at the end of the Bible.

I like the overall size of the Bible but the size of the print is somewhat smaller than I like but I can read it if I use my reading glasses.  I have wanted a New King James Version of the Bible and am glad to have this one and look forward to trying to take action and make a change in my little part of the world.

Slept Through The Tornadoes

Filed under: Just Life on Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 by Deanna Gottreu | No Comments

Last night there were tornados and heavy rain all over the parish and I slept through most of it.  I went to bed about eleven and it was raining at that time with lots of thunder, lightning, and wind.  Since I don’t have TV and don’t listen to the radio I really did not know what was going on.  I woke up a few minutes before two and saw that the electricity had been off for my clock was blinking.  I don’t know how long the electricity had been off but it had been back on for about forty minutes according to my clock.  I set the clock and went back to sleep listening to the thunder and rain.

I got up this morning about ten and went to the computer to read my mail and get on Facebook to see what was going on with my friends.  That is when I learned that there had been tornadoes and flooding all over the parish with lots of trees down and roofs missing from some houses.  Glad that I slept through everything.  I have never been frightened by stormy weather but I bet if a tornado blew the roof off while I was sleeping I might change my mind and fear the weather.  If I had known that there were tornadoes in the area I would probably have grabbed some quilts, blankets, and a pillow and made myself a bed in the small hall that is in the middle of my house.  The sheriff’s department here in Jackson Parish will call and tell you if there is bad weather on the way.  Since I don’t have TV maybe I should sign up for that service.

This afternoon about two I was sitting at the computer and I heard a loud noise and about a minute later the electricity went off.  I called Entergy outage and they said that there were storms in the area and power should be back on by ten o’clock Thursday night.  Well that did not make me happy at all.  What really got to me was that my phone battery was almost gone and of course I had no way to charge it.  I called Ashley so see if I could plug in my phone at her house before church and then pick up after church.  As I told Ashley, I could deal with no electricity but I really did not want to be without a phone. Right then I was wishing that I had a landline phone and not just a cell phone.  Not long after talking with her, the electricity came back on.  Was not even off for an hour.  I learned from a friend at church tonight that a transformer just down the road from me was knocked loose so that had to be the loud noise I heard.

Max On Life by Max Lucado

Filed under: Book Reviews on Monday, April 18th, 2011 by Deanna Gottreu | No Comments

Max On Life by Max Lucado is a book that can help anyone who has questions about some of the most important things in life.  The book is well written, organized, and easy to read and understand.

The book is comprised of 172 spiritual questions that are divided into seven different categories including Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Home, Haves/Have-Nots, and Hereafter.  Max’s answers to all the questions are simple and easy to understand and all are answered with compassion and knowledge of Biblical truths.  The answer to each question is backed up with Scripture references along with Max’s thoughts and opinions.  Two examples of the kind of questions asked are: “What is the purpose of worship? It doesn’t seem that God would need us to sing to him.” and “I’ve read the verse in the Bible about praying without ceasing.  Does anyone actually do this?”  At the end of the book are topical and Scripture indexes making for easy further study.

Max not only gives answers that are honest and practical but where appropriate he used humor to get a point across.  One of my favorites was the comment at the end of an answer to someone who feared growing old.  “Getting old is inevitable. But are you going to hobble and groan your way to the grave or race your rickety old wheelchair downhill to your funeral? We’re all going to end up the same way, but we can have fun getting there!”  I probably liked that one since I am in my seventh decade of life.

I would recommend Max On Life to anyone who has questions about life, spiritual or otherwise, and all the problems that we face on an almost daily basis.

A Conversation With God For Women by Marcia Ford

Filed under: Book Reviews on Monday, April 11th, 2011 by Deanna Gottreu | No Comments

A Conversation With God For Women by Marcia Ford is quite an interesting book with fifty-five different questions about spiritual issues that women would like to ask God.  The questions were divided into seven different sections that were titled, God, Jesus, The Bible, Life, Prayer, Relationships, and Good and Evil.  The book is very thought provoking and the author gives very thorough answers to all the questions.

Each chapter begins with a question such as “Why aren’t some prayers answered?”  Two answers are given for each question in a conversational style of writing with one answer being from God and one from Jesus.  For some questions, there are also answers from other persons in the Bible.  Scripture references are given for all answers and at the end of the book are notes that contain all the Biblical references.  I would have preferred the Scripture references at the end of each chapter but at the end of the book was workable.

Even though I knew that Marcia Ford wrote the answers, at times when I was reading I would feel that God and Jesus were actually having a one on one conversation with me.

The Final Summit by Andy Andrews

Filed under: Book Reviews on Monday, April 11th, 2011 by Deanna Gottreu | No Comments

The Final Summit by Andy Andrews is a well written and very easy to read book that held my interest from the first page to the final page even though I have never been a fan of books of the time travel genre.  This book was well worth the read.

The Final Summit is the sequel to The Traveler’s Gift and for this reason I obtained a copy of The Traveler’s Gift and read it first to acquaint myself with David Ponder, the main character in both books, and all the other Travelers that were part of the story.

The Archangel Gabriel appears to David Ponder for the second time and tells him of a summit conference that is to be held with all the Travelers and they are to answer a question that will save humanity.  The question is:  “What does humanity need to do, individually and collectively, to restore itself to the pathway toward successful civilization?”  There is a time limit for answering the question and the Travelers will only have five chances to get the correct two-word answer.  The Travelers working to find the solution included such notable historical figures as Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, King David, and King Solomon.  Not only were the Travelers working to find the answer but also many of them gave historical anecdotes that made for interesting and many times amusing reading.

All the while that I was reading the book I was thinking right along with the Travelers trying to figure out what the two word principle would be that would save humanity.  It was rather exciting to keep reading after the summit members would give an answer that was not correct.  Each answer given was an excellent solution but just not the correct answer that would save humanity.  After the five incorrect answers were given, Gabriel gave the Travelers more time and finally the correct answer to the question was found.

Unto The Hills A Daily Devotional by Billy Graham

Filed under: Book Reviews on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 by Deanna Gottreu | No Comments

When I saw that the author of Unto The Hills A Daily Devotional was Billy Graham I knew that it had to be a good book.  When I first received the book, I read the entries for New Years Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the Fourth of July.  After reading just those four days of devotionals, I knew that this was going to be a favorite book and was anxious to begin the year with this new devotional book.   I have now read a little over a month and a half of devotions and can honestly say that of the many different devotional books that I have read, this one is the very best.

Dr. Graham begins each daily devotional with a subject for the day and an appropriate scripture verse dealing with the same subject. Then he gives a short message that is thought provoking and inspiring, and ends the devotional with a very meaningful prayer.

Whether you prefer to have your personal daily devotional time in the morning or evening, I can say without reservation that this is THE devotional book to own to enhance your quiet time with the Lord.
