Memorial Day, 2010

On this Memorial Day, I want to say a big heartfelt thank you to all the men and women in the military for keeping America safe for the rest of us.

Brian and I had a kiddie lunch of peanut butter and banana sandwiches.  I loved them as a kid but they are not as good as they used to be.  Brian also asked if bananas were as good as when I was a kid since they are now grown to withstand shipping.  I told him no they were not as good.  Time changes just about everything

I finally got myself moving and convinced Brian to help me move a table from the kitchen into another room that is not being used.  Then I asked him if he would help me move my bed to my studio in an hour or so.  He said we could move it sooner for he had decided to drive down to visit Christy.  I was waiting on him to tell me when he was ready and here he came with the box springs.  It is just a double bed and he is a big guy so he probably moved it easier by himself than with me helping.  So, I just sat and waited until he finished the job.

I bought a couple of bookcases back in February and kept debating if I wanted to keep them or return them.  Today I finally decided that I would return the bookcases but when I looked at the receipt I saw that I bought the bookcases ninety-four days ago.  Wal-Mart’s policy is that you can return something up to ninety days.  I called the service desk and told the lady that I bought the bookcases three months and four days ago and was wondering if they would still let me return them.  She said that she thought that would be all right.  The box for each bookcase weighed seventy pounds so I got the dolly and moved one to the car.  However I could not get the box into the car for the corner kept catching on the back of the front seat.  I very pitifully told Brian about my problem and bless his heart he slid the box into the car and then came into the studio and picked up the other one and took it to the car.

When I got to the service desk in Wal-Mart both ladies working the desk were dealing with a young woman trying to return a TV without a receipt.  This problem was taking forever but I stood there waiting my turn and finally one of the ladies asked what I needed.  I explained my situation so she made a call and said yes I could return the bookcases.  Then I had to wait some more while a guy came from the back to get them from my car.  Of course he came without a cart and had to go back for that which meant more waiting.  When I got back inside with the bookcases I still had to wait for a while.  But eventually the lady rang up my refund, gave me a receipt to sign, and handed me my money.

All this time I had been standing and my knees were about to give out on me so I made a beeline for the riding carts.   I was so happy to sit down that I rode around the store finding all kinds of things that I actually needed and filled the basket even though I had only gone in the store to return the bookcases and buy a can of bug spray.

When I had walked into Wal-Mart I had smelled the delicious aroma of fried chicken and right then and there I decided to pick up some for my supper since Brian would not be around to eat with me.  When I got to the deli I changed my mind and bought a meat pie after the lady assured me that it was not very spicy.  The onion rings looked so good that I also bought a few of those.   Then I wandered down a frozen food aisle and picked up a Sara Lee frozen lemon cake for dessert.  As I was sitting at home eating my meat pie, onion rings, and lemon cake with a glass of sweet raspberry ice tea I had a good laugh thinking about what I was eating.  Definitely not on the good meal list but hey, it was a holiday and most people were eating barbeque.  In my defense I must say that I very seldom eat such a poor diet.  I was quite upset thought when I took my first bite of the meat pie for it was so hot with pepper that it took a quart or iced tea and the cold cake to finally cool down my mouth.  If I see that lady behind the deli again I am going to tell her that I can’t trust her opinion about hot, spicy foods.  The truth is that Scott and Brian are the only two people who can taste food and know if it is mild enough for me.
