Scott’s Track Quilt

When I look at pictures of this quilt or the quilt itself I cannot believe how I made it. The quilt is sixty inches wide and eighty inches long and made of one piece of fleece on the front and one on the back. The figures and letters are from cotton broadcloth. I did a very wide satin stitch on the sewing machine to appliqué the figures and letters onto the fleece. Believe me that took some twisting, turning, rolling, and determination to get them appliquéd. The two pieces of fleece were quilted together with batting in between before I attached the appliqués. There is no way under the sun that I would do appliqué that way today. I now do in sections and then put together. I guess the reason that I did it was because it was a special gift for Scott and I had just gotten into quilting and had not thought up easy ways to do appliqué.
I finished the quilt the night before Scott went to the state competition as a discus thrower. When I arrived at the stadium where the meet was being held, Scott and several of his friends met me. I presented the quilt to him and the girls in the group immediately took it, spread it out, and sat on it. I was a little annoyed with the way they just took over the quilt but it did not seem to bother Scott so I did not say anything. After all I had made it to be used and if they wanted to sit on it to watch the meet then that was all right with me.
The state competition was much more exciting for me than the other competitions that he had been in. The match was down to Scott and one other guy that was more or less the favorite to win since this was not his first state competition. It came down to the last throw and I was almost holding my breath. The other guy threw the discus and had a good distance. Then Scott threw the discus and it went just a little farther and he had won. MY SON was the state champion in discus. You can believe that I was yelling louder than any of the other people from Quitman. He was so excited when he came off the field that he gave two of his teachers a hug and then even gave me a hug in front of God and everyone. It was hard to say who was the happiest and most excited, Scott or me.
I had been under the impression that if he won he would be the champ for the entire state but he was the champ for all schools the size of Quitman High School. The schools are classed by size and at the time Quitman had approximately five hundred students from kindergarten through twelfth grade. But to this Mom he was still THE champ and it was a great way to end his high school career.
I can truthfully say that this quilt has been USED. Scott used it all through college and then it has been on his bed ever since. Even with all the use it is still in good condition except for the fleece looking a little scruffy. The quilt was for Scott’s high school graduation which was just a week or so after he won the state championship in discus. Maybe it reminds him of his victory, I know it does me.

This quilt is nice too. Love and Hugs Dianne
