Advent Calendar Finished And Delivered

A few months ago I decided that I was going to make an Advent calendar for Bryce my surrogate grandson and of course I waited until the 29th of November to start. I had one that was a pre-printed panel and was very cute. However, the more I worked on it the more I disliked it for it was going to take so much time to finish. I put it away and searched through my idea folder and found a simple one that I liked which was twenty-five squares set in the shape of a Christmas tree. I went to bed planning to get up early so that I could get the calendar finished by tonight but it was nine by the time I finally got to the kitchen for food. When noon rolled around and I had done nothing but press the two pieces of fabric, I realized that I would never get it finished in time to give to Bryce tonight. For some reason I just could not get excited about making it and then I had a brilliant idea. I had a Santa that was an Advent calendar that I bought two or three years ago and had only used once. Since I am getting rid of a lot of my Christmas stuff I decided that the Santa would be perfect for Bryce. Instead of sewing, I spent the afternoon wrapping twenty-five little gifts and then making little notes to put in the pockets on Santa’s suit.

About five I called Ashley, Bryce’s mom, and asked if she and Bryce would like to go to Burger King for supper. Burger King is Bryce’s favorite place to eat. Actually I think it is the playground that he really likes. She came by and picked my up and when I got in the car she asked if Mexican was all right for supper. She is having tests done tomorrow and cannot eat after midnight so she wanted a big meal. Before we ordered I told her that this was my treat and she said oh no it was hers for it was a belated birthday supper for me. We had a great meal with good conversation.

Since the Christmas lights were turned on in Jonesboro this past weekend we drove around looking at all the beautiful displays right after we left the restaurant. Then it was back to her house and time to give Bryce his calendar. He was so excited that I thought we were going to have to tie him down to keep him still. Some of the pockets had candy and two had tiny cars and of course he saw those immediately. I kept repeating to him that he could NOT take them out now but had to wait until the right day. Ashley cleared a little table and we stood the Santa up with all the little gifts around him. His first gift was a coloring book and tomorrow he gets a big box of crayons. As I was wrapping the items I realized that I had no crayons for the coloring book. It just so happened that I had a brand new box of forty-eight crayons that I bought to color on fabric and they had never been used so I wrapped those and saved myself a trip to Wal-Mart.

After Bryce removes the item for the day, then he puts a small fabric candy cane into the pocket for the day. The calendar was not made to hold little goodies but to just have the candy cane moved each day. I knew it would be more fun for Bryce AND me if there were little goodies in each pocket to be removed before the candy cane was put in the pocket.
