Hyacinths To Feed Thy Soul

When Scott was home for Easter and his birthday, we were talking about money and I made the comment, “that is hyacinths to feed the soul.” Of course his comment was, “what?” I could remember neither the proverb nor the story that I had read many years ago in Reader’s Digest about hyacinths to feed the soul. I could remember the story but could not repeat it successfully just like I cannot tell a joke. Today I was sorting through and clearing out some of the files on my computer when I found the proverb.

Hyacinths
When of thy worldly goods
Thou find thyself bereft,
And from the goodly store
Two loaves alone are left…
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.
Persian proverb

Unfortunately I have used that phrase many times to rationalize why I was buying something that I really did not need but really wanted.

Today was a beautiful sunny day but very windy. As I have been driving to Ruston the past couple of weeks I have been seeing red clover everywhere. On the way up today I took a couple of pictures but was not happy with them so on the way home this afternoon I pulled onto the shoulder of the road, put down the passenger side window, and took this picture.

The clover is on the sides of the highway and all down the center median for probably five miles.  God certainly knew what He was doing when he created the world and all its beauty.
