What Brown (UPS) Did For Me

This evening when I came home from Ruston two LARGE boxes were under the carport. I was very excited to see them for the lady at Fairfield had told me the batting should be here this week. I was hoping but not really expecting it until next week. I knew that each roll was seventy-five yards but for some reason I did not think the roll would be as large as it is. Took some pushing and shoving to get the boxes inside and one of them opened.

Going to be so nice to use batting off a roll instead of a big piece with lots of wrinkles from being folded into a small bag. The approximate sizes of the quilts that Lynn gave me were 35″ x 39″ for the preschoolers and 48″ x 60″ for the elementary school kids. The batting is forty-five inches wide so the smaller quilts will be as long as the batting is wide and the larger quilts will be as wide as the batting. And I cannot see cutting a few inches off the fabric to make the smaller quilts only thirty five inches wide so they may end up being more like forty-five inches square. Actually that size will be large enough for the child for a longer period of time. And a quilt forty-five inches wide is fine for a first to sixth grade student. Many lap quilts made for adults are only that wide. I am trying to eliminate as much cutting and piecing as I can so that I can get more quilts made in less time.

Last night I measured the box that my printer came in for it seemed like a nice size for mailing quilts to Lynn. With the dimensions of the box and putting the weight at fifty pounds, it would cost approximately thirty five dollars to send the box by UPS or USPS. When I saw the size of the batting boxes I decided they were perfect for filling with quilts for they were twenty dollars each to mail for UPS went by the dimensions of the box and not the weight which was listed as fifty-four pounds on the packing slip. Now if I can just fill one of the boxes in the next three weeks I can mail for ten dollars less than the small box.

So that I can get up early for the third day in a row, I am off to bed so I can start sewing soon after I get up. My plan or maybe I should say hope is to get two quilts made tomorrow.
