Hard to believe that Christmas for 2007 has come and gone. Scott and I had a very quiet and lazy day. I got up about ten this morning and when I came into my studio I asked what he would like to eat and of course his answer was, “pancakes would be good.” I was not thinking breakfast or I would have known that was what he would say. I was thinking more lunch foods. The rest of the day when one of us was hungry we would get what we wanted. Good old mom was only good for one cooked meal. Last year Scott and I also spend a very quiet day so guess we have started a tradition for the two of us.
After we stopped going to Mom G’s in Kansas City for Christmas, our family tradition was to have party foods on Christmas Eve night and then a big, traditional dinner on Christmas Day. After Don died we more or less had our celebration Christmas Eve night and presents were opened on Christmas morning. Our meal on Christmas Day was mainly leftovers from the night before. This is the first year that I will not be doing Christmas Eve and you know what, it does not bother me a bit. Time to let the next generation take over. In fact, I would be happy to start a new tradition of going out to dinner on Christmas Eve night and then out to dinner on Christmas Day. When we were going to Kansas City for Christmas our tradition was for Don, his mother, my mother and me, to go out for a Chinese dinner on Christmas Eve night. Scott was with us twice before he was two years old and then when he was two we were in Savannah, Georgia, and that was when we stopped going to Grandma’s for Christmas. Circumstances prevented us from going to Kansas City that year so Don and I and his siblings and their spouses decided it was time for all of us to start our own family traditions. My mother was a widow so she always spent Christmas with us and Mom G would spend Christmas with a different son or daughter each year. Now Don, my mother, and Don’s mom are all gone so the Christmas celebration has lost some of the joy. But I still have my wonderful sons so it is still a great season of the year.
