A week ago today, November 13, was my 69th birthday and it was a very enjoyable day. Every Tuesday a group of ladies in my church meet for Bible Study and each month we have lunch together by either going out to a restaurant, going to someone’s home, or having a potluck lunch at church. We sign up at the first of the year for the month we want to be the hostess and I decided to take November since that was my birthday month. We normally get together for lunch on the third Tuesday of the month but because the third Tuesday was only two days before Thanksgiving we decided to eat on the second Tuesday, which just happened to be my birthday. I decided that for my month we would do potluck and would eat in the church dining area.
I got up earlier than normal to be sure that I would get all my food to the church and still be on time for Bible study. All the ladies were bringing salads and I was bringing dessert, beverage, and crackers. After the study we all moved to the kitchen and everyone helped set up the buffet. We were all ready to eat and one of the ladies said, “Okay” and everyone started singing Happy Birthday. Needless to say I was very surprised. And then to add to the surprise, the ladies had a beautiful birthday cake decorated with yellow roses.
The lunch was a great success and everyone seemed to enjoy all the many different salads. The ladies sent me home with the rest of the birthday cake and since I had also taken cake, this meant I now had two cakes that I should not eat. I cut a huge chunk of each cake and put in a container for Brian and Christy. Since there was still a huge piece of birthday cake left, I cut a large piece with the yellow roses and put in the freezer for Scott when he comes home for Thanksgiving. There were still plenty of both cakes left for me to pig out on during the rest of the week. I had been losing weight each week but last week I gained. Is it any wonder that I gained weight since I ate almost the equivalent of a whole cake and then ate at a fast food restaurant every day? I am surprised that I did not gain more than I did.
When I got home from the luncheon I booted up the computer and checked out all the birthday wishes that I had received from my online friends who are literally scattered all over the world. The funniest card was from Scott. It had a couple of funny little guys who were blowing out candles on a birthday cake. After doing that they started coughing and then one said, “You are too dang old.” I almost fell off my chair laughing. After a couple of hours on the computer I met Brian at the library to give him his cake and then I went to Taco Bell to have a quick supper.
When I got back home I turned on the TV to watch a couple of shows and also turned on the computer. I never just sit and watch a TV show or movie anymore but just listen while I play on the computer. If there is no speaking then I have to take a quick look. Around midnight I decided that I had celebrated enough so I went to bed. Did not feel a bit older when I woke up the next morning. I had a wonderful birthday but find it hard to believe hat I am only a year from the big 70.
Here is a picture of the corner of my surprise birthday cake. Wish I had taken my camera with me to the luncheon but had no idea that the ladies would be presenting me with a beautiful cake. It was also delicious.
