Tonight I Was a Kid Again For A While
Tonight was the annual October Fest at my church. The two ladies in charge had been asking for helpers for several weeks so last Sunday I told them that I would help out. My job was to be at one of the big inflated slides for the little kids. My slide was a seahorse being pulled by a turtle. There was also a huge inflated alligator that the kids crawled into his mouth and then slid down the tail part. For the older kids there was a sinking Titanic and an iceberg. And there was face painting, a cotton candy machine and hayrides for anyone interested. There was even a small six-seat ferris wheel.
But the best part of all was the food that is typical of such an event. I can’t believe what all I ate. Started out with a hot dog and diet Dr Pepper. Then it was time to help at the slide and I took the second Dr Pepper with me. When my shift was over I went back inside for another snack of Fritos covered in chili and cheese and my third Dr Pepper. This time when I went outside I was just wandering around and visiting and decided to try some cotton candy. Had the guy make a small one for remembering it from fifty years ago I was not sure I would like it. Surprisingly it was rather good for it was not just sweet but was flavored. By this time my poor old arthritic knees were yelling at me so I left to run to Wal-Mart to pick up a few groceries and then go home.
I had heard before I left church that later in the evening there would be caramel apples so on my way back home from Wal-mart I stopped back by the church. I was expecting an apple on a stick and covered with caramel but there were slices of apples in a bowl and then covered with caramel. It was just as good and a lot easier and less messy to eat. Grabbed my FOURTH diet Dr Pepper and went back outside to visit some more. The cotton candy had been so good that I decided to have a full size serving this time. It was rather amusing so see all the adults standing around eating cotton candy. While we were standing there talking someone mentioned hot chocolate with marshmallow cream. Well of course I could not pass that up so went inside and had a cup. :O)
Did more visiting inside and then decided that it was time for me to go home. The fest was from 5:00 pm until 8:30 pm and when I got in my car to leave church it was almost 8:30 pm. In that three and a half hours I had eaten a hotdog with the trimmings, Frito pie, four diet Dr Peppers, two cones of cotton candy, a caramel apple and a cup of hot chocolate. I truly was a kid again tonight for what adult eats like that? However, I was not the only adult eating such food but probably none of them had four cans of pop. :O)
Must say that I was an adult and acted my age before going to church. Today was an election day in Louisiana. It was the primary for the governor’s race and several other local and state offices. I only voted for the governor and police jury for I knew absolutely nothing about the other people on the ballot. I think it is better to not vote than to just choose a candidate by more or less just closing your eyes and clicking the button. When I got home I forgot to turn on the TV to see who won. Now it is too late for it is after midnight but I can find out tomorrow at church.
