Halloween Wall Hanging Finally Finished

I certainly felt like an idiot this afternoon. In Louisiana we have elections in October for the gubernatorial primary and to elect other local officials such as the Police Jury. So last night I put a note on my computer which said, “VOTE” for I did not want to forget to go vote today. In mid afternoon I left home to go to the library to pick up a book they were holding for me and stopped by the voting place on the way. Pulled into the parking lot and there was not a soul in sight. Then it dawned on me that I just might have the wrong date. Voting is next Saturday, not today.

About five minutes after I got home from the library, my friend Mignon called and invited me to have supper with her and her family. Of course I accepted and left for her house about ten minutes later. Funny thing is that she had also thought that today was the day to vote. Makes me feel better to know I was not the only one who was confused about the date. Had a great visit with Mignon and family and got home only about an hour before Brian and Christy came by to pick up their mail and some Halloween goodies.

Brian called this morning to see if I had a cake box for Christy needed one for the cake she had made for a baby shower and that they had to transport to Alexandria. Told him I did not have a cake box but did have a large plastic container that they could use. I got the container out of the fabric room and it had Halloween stuff in it. Since I do not do anything for Halloween anymore I decided to give the stuff to Christy and Brian. I actually got rid of a few pieces of “stuff.” One of the things was a wall hanging that I had stitched the edges and trimmed about three years ago but had never done anymore to it. So, today I actually did some sewing and “quilted” on some of the lines to make it seem more finished.

I finally admitted something today that I have been refusing to admit. Having sight in only one eye and also having glaucoma, I cannot see close work as I could a few years ago. My vision in the one eye is 20/25 and I no longer have to wear glasses but my depth perception is off and that makes it hard to stay on a printed line to sew. I don’t have a problem sewing seams but following lines this morning was hard to do. Being a perfectionist, I was not happy with the results. However I am trying hard to overcome that habit and I am probably the only one who will ever notice the crooked lines.

Halloween wall hanging

Years ago when I would make similar wall hangings I would sew the item with right sides together and then turn, press, and do decorative stitching on the edge. Needless to say that took a lot of time and all the time I was doing this I kept seeing similar items that were just stitched on the outside line and then the three layers were trimmed to about one fourth of an inch from the stitching. I finally decided that if everyone else was making them that way then why shouldn’t I do the same. Besides, I probably spent almost as much time making the wall hanging as the amount of time it would be displayed. So I got smart and now I sew the edges and cut. :O) Just another thing that I am doing to help simplify my life.

What a cute wall hanging! It is a wonderful feeling when you finally finish something - no matter how long it takes! I have a crewel hanging that took me 20 years to finally complete!!!
